Bringing together whisky and good friends

WIN Tickets To The 2014 Kaya FM Wine and Malt Whisky Affair in Johannesburg

Kaya FM Wine & Malt Whisky Affair, Joburg, 29-30 May 2014

For the fourth year in a row, Wade Bales will be delighting wine and whisky lovers in Johannesburg at the Kaya FM Wine & Malt Whisky Affair brought to you by Old Mutual in association with Wade Bales Wine Society. Two nights of sheer indulgence with a stellar line-up of whiskies and wines, running from 29th May – 30th May 2014 at The Firs in Rosebank.

Carry on reading about the details of the event and be sure to enter our competition to WIN tickets to the Affair!

What can I expect at the Affair?

Loyal attendees already know the drill, but for those of you who don’t know what to expect, here is the low-down. Take over twenty of SA’s top wine farms and give them a chance to showcase just two of their best wines and then add over 40 world class whiskies to the mix. In between sipping on your wines and whiskies, there will be a gourmet spread of breads, cheeses and antipasti. A simple recipe for a great evening out!

This year sees a new feature at the Affair in the form of Master Classes for both whisky and wine. And extra R20 per person, per class gets you face-to-face with winemakers and whisky experts, who will passionately educate about what’s in your glass. Well worth it, so make sure you get your Master Class tickets early because seats are limited.

Which wine farms will be represented at the show?

I’m glad you asked. Expect to see Ernie Els, Paul Culver and Mulderbosch wines as well as Groot Constantia, Rust en Vrede and Groote Post to name a few. I’m a red drinker myself, so I’ll be in the line to taste the Paul Cluver Pinot Noir 2012, Ernie Els Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 and the Rust en Vrede Shiraz 2011 amongst all the whiskies you’ll see below.

Ok, that’s great. Now tell me, what distilleries and whiskies will be available for tasting?

Favourite distilleries from Scotland abound at the Kaya FM Wine and Malt Whisky Affair Whisky, as well as some lesser-known ones that deserve some time in the spotlight. We go further afield too – anyone want to taste Japanese and Taiwanese whiskies? Well, you can!

Whiskies on my “To Taste” list

I’m always drawn to the whiskies that are new to the market or harder to get your hands on, so I have my sights set on tasting the Bruichladdich Scottish Barley and Port Charlotte, as well as pretty much anything that Hector McBeth has brought along with him, like the two Provenance bottlings, the OMC Linkwood, the Japanese whiskies and more. The Aficionados stand run by Paul la Cock has some great drams too in the form of Kavalan from Taiwan and some really nice Balblair vintages.

Hard at work at the Kaya FM Wine & Malt Whisky Affair

So when is the event and how much does it cost?

Head on over to The Firs Shopping Complex in Rosebank on Thursday 29th May and Friday 30th May. The event runs for 3 hours a night, starting at 6pm and ending at 9pm promptly. With so many wines and whiskies to taste, get there early as you’ll be surprised at how quickly time flies!

There are two ticket options this year:

R180 per ticket and that includes unlimited wine and whisky tasting (don’t be a drunkard though!), a complimentary glass, a selection of gourmet cheeses, antipasti deli and artisanal breads.

For R200, you get all of the above plus entry into wine or whisky Master Class of your choice. A no-brainer if you ask me!
