Nothing makes a Monday better than finding you still have a quarter of a bottle of this tucked away. Actually, realising there's Guinness in the fridge, and that a pairing is on the cards, makes it doubly better.
The Offerman Edition is Lagavulin's collaboration with Nick Offerman, and this 11 year old is finished in Guinness casks.
Nose
Smoky, with cocoa powder, muscovado sugar and a meaty, yeasty note – possibly the Guinness influence.
Palate
A velvety, creamy mouthfeel. Quite ashy on the first sip, progressing towards tar, with saltiness on the sides of the tongue and biscuity, doughy notes.
Finish
Medium in length, with a dry ashiness and echoes of the stout and chocolate notes.
With Water
I wouldn't add water to this one. Pair it with a pint of Guinness instead – as you'd expect, the two complement each other. Take a sip of the Guinness, making sure you get some of the creamy head, swallow, then immediately take a sip of the whisky and swirl it around your mouth with what's left of the head. One of life's little pleasures.
Thoughts
My favourite in the range of Nick Offerman releases from Lagavulin. The Guinness cask just works so well here, and the result is beautifully integrated: the stout notes sit comfortably alongside the smoke and ash rather than competing with them.
It's a good dram on its own, but the Guinness pairing is what makes it special. If you can find a bottle, keep a few cans in the fridge for it.
