Nose
Raisins, dark rum, brown sugar and dried fruit, with red berries and oak underneath.
Palate
Rich and sweet, with dark fruit, spice and a sticky, unmistakable rum character. The Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon cask brings some structure, but the rum cask finish steals the show.
Finish
Lingering dark fruit, sweet rum and warming spice.
Thoughts
This is a cracker. Matured for 9.5 years in a Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon cask before a rum cask finish, and that rum cask absolutely wins the day. It really does taste like rum and raisin, which was one of my least favourite ice cream flavours as a kid, almost on a par with choc-mint. Funny how things change. I’ve tried Killowen’s rum from the rum cask before, and it’s bloody good stuff, so it’s no surprise that it makes such an impression here. One of those whiskies where the name on the bottle tells you exactly what you’re going to get. Really glad I got to try this.
