Nose
Rich red berry fruits lead the way, followed by caramel and an almost treacle-like sweetness, with a hint of smoke lurking underneath.
Palate
Thick, rich and intensely flavoured, with ashy berry jam and peat smoke layered over dark chocolate. The berry fruits become increasingly cooked and concentrated as the whisky develops.
Finish
Long and lingering, with the cooked berry fruits, peat smoke and dark chocolate carrying on well after the last sip.
Thoughts
It’s not the most refined whisky you’ll ever try, but boy, does it deliver. The oloroso sherry influence brings plenty of richness, while the combination of dark fruit, peat and sweetness makes this a seriously satisfying dram. At half its usual price, it was an absolute no-brainer — and it has left me wanting to explore more of the Kilchoman range again.
